City of Bethel Proclamation

Proclaiming May Childhood Cancer Research Month and

Honoring Bethel Resident Logan Hastie as an

Ambassador for Childhood Cancer Awareness

WHEREAS,  cancer is the leading cause of death from disease among children in the United States;

WHEREAS,  according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1,153 children younger than 15 years old and 8,863 adolescents and young adults between the ages of 15 and 39, lost their lives due to cancer in 2020;

WHEREAS, 15,000 people under the age of 20 are diagnosed with cancer each year nationwide. Childhood cancers are uncommon (between 1%-3%), and there are age barriers that prevent youth from accessing some of the latest developments in cancer treatment due to limited research;

WHEREAS, although there has been a reduction in the cancer mortality rate since 1991, the number of childhood cases has increased 24 percent over the last 40 years and only six new drugs have been approved by the FDA to specifically treat childhood cancers in the last 20 years according to the American Childhood Cancer Organization;

WHEREAS, Bethel resident, Logan Hastie age 13, has Synovial Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer accounting for only 5-10% of soft tissue tumors; children diagnosed with Synovial Sarcoma are only a small fraction of that total percentage;

WHEREAS, when Logan wasn’t riding the motocross tracks, he was participating in childhood synovial sarcoma research and clinical trials, helping to improve the understanding of this devastating disease;

WHEREAS, throughout Logan’s fight against cancer, he and his family have been tirelessly raising awareness of childhood cancer through Logan’s story;

WHEREAS, more must be done to raise awareness and to overcome the limitations in childhood cancer research to ensure medical advances in the diagnosing, treating, and eliminating childhood cancer;

NOW, THEREFORE, the Bethel City Council, proclaims, May, Childhood Cancer Research Month, and together we honor and join our Resident Ambassador, Logan Hastie and his family in the fight against Childhood Cancer through collaborative education and awareness.
