Structure and Vehicle Fire on East Avenue

The Bethel Fire and Police Departments responded to 236 East Avenue for a report of a structure fire at 3:36 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2022. Upon arrival, Firefighters observed one home and two vehicles fully involved in fire. Firefighters requested tones for additional personnel and water trucks, and deployed hose lines to protect exposures and contain the fire. A total of sixteen Firefighters, six Police Officers, one fire engine, one ladder truck, one command vehicle, two support vehicles, and five City of Bethel Public Works water tenders responded to the incident. Two occupants received severe burns and were quickly transported to the YKDRH Emergency Department for care and treatment. The names and ages of the victims are not being released at this time. The fire was brought under control once adequate resources arrived around 6:30 a.m. After interviewing witnesses and occupants, the fire was determined to be unintentional and caused by discarded smoking materials in dry grass. Alcohol was a factor in this incident.

The department would like to express its gratitude and appreciation to the community members and businesses for their donations of food and support to our first responders. If anyone is interested in becoming a Volunteer Firefighter or Emergency Medical Technician, please stop by the fire station, located at 320 Chief Eddie Hoffman Highway, Bethel, AK 99559, or call (907) 543-2131.
