Our 2022 Student of the Year is Mia McWilliams- a senior at California State University, East Bay and is expected to graduate in May of 2023!
Mia McWilliams was raised in Unalaska to Tatsuro McWilliams and Alicia Kochuten. Her grandparents are Victor & Augie Kochuten and Brian & Fumiko McWilliams.
Upon graduation, Mia would love to work for her tribe as a CPA or even own her own accounting firm based in Unalaska. Mia states that most CPA’s and accounting firms of Alaska are in Anchorage and wants to provide local accounting services. She believes while working for or in the tribe, she would be able to help start or maintain much needed programs for the community. Such as providing better healthcare, educating tribal members in finance by offering free online seminar courses and creating an accounting internship for local high school students.
Mia’s excellence in Academia, her past and continuous volunteer work, her in-depth community involvement, and her plans to serve our Unangax̂ people made her stand out amongst her peers in The Aleut Foundation’s 2022-2023 student cohort. Awam ix̂amnaa Mia!
